Beyond the Rainbow, a project of The Curve Foundation, is a groundbreaking conversation series that seeks to create an intersectional, multi generational space touching on gender, queerness, race, ability, and activism of yesterday and today. Beyond the Rainbow seeks to challenge the possibilities and limits of queer representation as a path towards liberation.

Beyond the Rainbow: Queer Women of Color Leaders Shaping the Future

Five trailblazing queer women of color nonprofit leaders share their perspectives on the importance of social justice across a range of areas. This discussion focuses on racial equity, economic justice and intergenerational dialogue in arts and culture, youth development, violence prevention, and legal advocacy. Moderated by Janelle Perez, with panelists Imani Rupert-Gordon, T. Kebo Drew, Orchid Pusey, and Kimberly Aceves-Iñiguez.

Beyond the Rainbow: Archiving Our History

Lesbian archives are vital repositories of history, culture, and community. In this panel discussion, representatives from some of the largest lesbian archives in the USA will explore the importance of archiving lesbian narratives, the challenges and successes of their work, and the impact of their collections on promoting visibility and understanding of LGBTQ+ women’s and nonbinary people’s experiences. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive exploration of the importance of archives in preserving, celebrating, and advancing our visibility and diversity while also spotlighting some of the largest and most important lesbian collections in the USA. Featuring special guest Joan Nestle, founder of the Lesbian Herstory Archives, with panelists Angela Brinskele, Erin Bell, Amanda Cervantes, and Olivia.

Beyond the Rainbow: Out on the Air

Women outnumber men for television news reporting jobs, but just a handful of those reporters are out on the air. At a time when newsrooms are looking for people to be their authentic selves, why are so few public with their sexual orientation? Presented by NLGJA: The Association for LGBTQ+ Journalists, this panel explores some of the barriers queer women still face, the social pressures lesbians feel to conform, and what needs to happen for more women to feel comfortable. Moderated by 2023 winner of the Curve Award for Excellence in Lesbian Coverage, Femi Redwood. Panelists include Taylor Bruck, Lucy Kafanov, Amanda VanAllen, and Nora J.S. Reichardt.

Beyond the Rainbow: Two-Spirit Healing Water Ceremony

Uniting Resilience describes the Water Ceremony as “a cultural and spiritual ceremony. Water is the essence of life, as an unborn child in their mothers whom to being born with a purpose. We need water to survive […] As the water is added, ceremonial songs are sung, and the combined water is symbolic of our cultural way. Before colonization, Native Two-Spirit relatives were the ceremony keepers.” The ceremony and discussion will be led by Two-Spirit IndigeQueer community leaders, including the co-founders of Uniting Resilience. The discussion will also explore the journey of healing the broken “Circle of Life”.

Coming Home: Finding Comunidad Across Borders and Place

For many of us, latinidad is complicated. Our communities are rife with anti-Blackness and indigenous erasure, and currents of machismo that allow sexism and homophobia to force us into exile often a second generation of exile for those of us born to refugees. In the spirit of Latinx Heritage month we envision us exploring what it means to return a casa: how we reconcile with the wounds of machismo, homofobia, and re-create comunidad with our elders and chosen family

Celebrating Pride & Organizing Communities in Disability, Gender, Queerness

July is Disability Pride Month and we are partnering with Autistic Women & Nonbinary Network for a special conversation about the intersections of disability, gender, and queerness. For the Love of Women

Queer womanhood is evolving, as are ideas of gender and sexuality. Loving women and creating safe queer spaces are hallmarks of lesbian lore, but what does it mean to love women and ourselves, today? Where are we buoyed by our love, and when does our womanhood let us down? For the launch of Beyond The Rainbow, we held a conversation on Lesbian Visibility Day to talk about gender, queer womanhood, and what visibility means to us.
