Beyond the Rainbow, a project of The Curve Foundation, is a groundbreaking conversation series that seeks to create an intersectional, multi generational space touching on gender, queerness, race, ability, and activism of yesterday and today. Beyond the Rainbow seeks to challenge the possibilities and limits of queer representation as a path towards liberation.
An inspiring conversation with pioneering queer women as they discuss how they are reshaping the sports bar landscape with inclusivity, empowerment, and community-building at the forefront. This panel explores the intersection of queer culture and sports, the unique challenges of running an LGBTQ+ inclusive business, and how each bar creates a welcoming space for queer women and allies to come together, celebrate sports, and build lasting connections. Moderated by Shelly Breen with panelists Jenny Nguyen, The Sports Bra (Portland, OR), Jillian Hiscock, A Bar of Their Own (Minneapolis, MN), Danielle & Sara, Rikki’s Women’s Sports Bar (San Francisco, CA), and Jax, Watch Me! (Long Beach, CA).
Three powerhouse filmmakers, Cheryl Dunye, Pratibha Parmar, and Madeleine Lim reflect on the past 25 years of the landscape for queer women of color in filmmaking, mapping what has or has not changed as well as where the needle might have shifted. They also touch upon a vision of the next 25 years, looking beyond representation and inclusion to what just and compelling filmmaking can be in order to create change. This panel is co-presented by The Curve Foundation and QWOCMAP (Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project).
Five queer photographers engaged in dialogue surrounding what constitutes an impactful image, how we create collective memory through visual media, and the evolution of lesbian/queer photography through the decades. We addressed these topics with a gender-expansive, trans-inclusive mindset. For many of us, latinidad is complicated. Our communities are rife with anti-Blackness and indigenous erasure, and currents of machismo that allow sexism and homophobia to force us into exile often a second generation of exile for those of us born to refugees. In the spirit of Latinx Heritage month we envision us exploring what it means to return a casa: how we reconcile with the wounds of machismo, homofobia, and re-create comunidad with our elders and chosen family
